The double slipper tub is a derivative of the slipper tub which came into being during the Victorian era. The original has a higher end for leaning back on to soak in a hot tub of water while the shallower end provided arm rests and a safe means of getting into the it. Due to this design, looking at it from the side its appearance resembled that of a slipper shoe, and is perhaps one of the origins of its name. You might remember seeing one in an old black and white movie or an American Western where public baths were in use. Earlier types were usually placed out in the middle of the room without any pipes or fixtures attached. Most were enameled cast iron and some were made of copper or porcelain.
After the slipper tub came the double slipper tub. Having both ends slope higher than the middle this one was designed to allow two people to lean back and enjoy soaking in a hot bath and is very popular with couples, not to mention being a unique looking tub. Some people worry about not having a shower, but this is easily remedied with a shower kit that can be installed with relative ease and little expense.
What Types Are There?
There are two types from which to choose. Cast iron is heavy and may very well require special construction work to support the weight if added to a more modern dwelling. It might be advisable to reinforce the support by adding more floor joists. There is also the shipping costs to be considered in having one of them delivered. Although they are extremely durable the claw foot design is very appealing to those who appreciate that wonderful vintage decor.
Cast Iron Double Slipper Tub
Cast iron helps to hold the water heat in the metal itself, helping to keep down on electricity and water bills to constantly refill the tub with additional hot water. You can lay there and soak for a much longer time before having to adjust the water temperature. Be careful not to fall asleep in it, though. A nice hot bath can be so relaxing that you will be so sleepy that you are unable to stay awake.
Not everyone can afford the expense of a cast iron tub, but for those who can they will have a tub that lasts for generations to come. Their grand children will be using the same tub, and their children after them. So, it can be said that a cast iron tub is an investment in the future.
Acrylic Double Slipper Tubs
The other popular type is made of acrylic, which is a vacuum-molded process using a sheet of acrylic and reinforced with fiberglass. This allows them to be less expensive, far more light weight, even more easily repaired and replaced. They are also, hi-gloss, non-porous and scratch resistant making them more attractive to those who prefer easy to clean bathrooms.
Additional benefits of the acrylic models are that they lend themselves well to installing whirlpool devices, if they were not originally made that way. They, too, hold the heat very well after the initial filling. They are also available in many colors, styles and price ranges. However, be sure not to use any cleaning products that contain acetates because they can corrode or crack acrylic. In the event that your acrylic tub should start to yellow or the color fade, use a product like Gel-Gloss to return it to its original luster.
